589 Cows

 My feet move the wall

As cars drawl off its old stone

Then cows backs emerge

As if whales breaking water

Their gentle rocking to chew

Mostly slow

Not a self

Not your thoughts and words

Not driven

584 rabbit

The rabbit ran as if in a dream
The dog noticed not but I saw
All the rabbits
The first  under the shed
In the jaws of our other dog
Screaming for the next life
The second  lived in our garden
For a week or two escaping only
To return marooned on our estate
With us in our lives without children
No escape for any of us
I saw the rabbit dream running
Perhaps for a fortnight
Skipping down pends ducking under cars
The last time on its hind legs
Right in front of my window
I was the first to blink
When I opened my eyes again
You were flat from a car
A merest baby on the roadside
Without eyes

582 who fed the chickens

Who fed the chickens
Who fed the boys
Sitting atop the chicken shed
Beside the field of cows
Deciding whose were whose

I remember banana and custard
We sprinkled sugar
I remember my mum's arched eye
At a rare school friend in the house
He had a cup of tea into which
Spoon after spoon of sugar fell
You see how they live the eye said

Who fed the chickens
Who fed the boys
You had the brown and white ones
I had the black and white
What colour were the chickens?

I remember fruit cake
I remember baked apples
And as if the cows had got into our house
And grown hands
And chosen weapons
I remember them fight like beasts
Crashing into walls screaming
She had a rolling pin
Then a frying pan
He had a knife against her throat

Who fed the chickens
Who fed the boys
I took your hand to a neighbour
Who gave us orange juice and bid us go away

I remember crossing a field
You swinging  at the end of his arm
Me mute in her hand
We love you she said
But who fed the chickens
And who fed the boys

578 Three ways of talking (and thinking)

POWER SPEECH
Puts to death
Claims the very throne
Hears no one

DELUSIONAL SPEECH
invents worlds
Makes rules that make knots
Is lonely

CONSOLATION SPEECH
skeletons
Side by side talking
With their hearts
